Night Call is a magazine of experimental prose and occasional criticism; it is named after the 1964 episode of The Twilight Zone directed by Jacques Tourneur; the switchboard operator is Ian Maxton.
We are interested in: rigor; improvisation; the sentence-substance; découpage; textural writing; the pure fantastic; the fourth person; materialist-formalism; spectres and speculation; prose-as-experience (especially the movement through gaps, interstices); work that mediates between the land of the living and the army of the dead.
We do not charge, but we also do not pay; please email original, unpublished prose as an attached doc or docx file to nightcallmag@gmail.com; there are no length minimums or maximums, but please don't send multiple pieces unless they are all under 500 words and sent at the same time in one document; we will have to pass on pieces with unconventional formatting if they exceed our limited web design knowledge, but please send them anyway and we'll see what we can do; translations highly encouraged as long as you have rights permissions.
Please include the title of the piece in the subject line along with your own categorization of it (fiction, etc.) in parentheses; please also keep any introductory/prefatory remarks brief, but do include a third-person bio so we know who you are; response times will be on a see-how-it-goes basis to start, but the aim will be to keep rejections quick, at least; pieces accepted for publication may undergo an editorial process (and if you don't want that, just let us know as early as possible; it's no hard feelings, but it may mean we ultimately pass on the piece); if your work is published here, please wait one year after the publication date to submit again.
No nazis, no LLMs, no exceptions; simultaneous submissions are presumed, just let us know if your work is accepted elsewhere before we've had the chance to respond to it; all pieces we pass on will receive a form rejection, but it's nothing personal (and you can submit again as soon after a rejection as you like).
All rights revert back to authors upon publication, just acknowledge us in any reprints.
Night Call is open for submissions for our inaugural dossier Ghost Stories for X-mas from 10/1-10/31. Submissions for the launch call will also be considered for later publication; the magazine will open for regular submissions sometime in the new year.
